Giles Peterson presents the Kamasi Washington and the GoGo Penguins as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival.
Tonight, Black Applause and I went to see super-talented Kamasi Washington at the Barbican. I wouldn't say that jazz is normally my jam but I generally open to most things – and thank goodness because it was a musical feast. The Manchurian GoGo Penguins opened the gig and were accompanied by some contemporary dance performances (note to their dresser: I was not impressed by the underwhelming outfits worn by the dancers, this distracted me from all the performances).
If you get a chance, check out the rest of the EFG London Jazz Festival. Unfortunately, due to the attacks in Paris, Washington cancelled his show in Paris. But London folks can rejoice, because he and his amazing band (with two ace drummers!) will be performing at the Scala in King's Cross tomorrow night.
And don't worry if you missed the performance at the Barbican, you can listen to the live recording of show on the BBC, or check out, The Nowness's video of Washington and band. You're welcome.
